Obama says pointed abortion query "above his pay grade"

advertisement

U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama side-stepped a pointed query about abortion on Saturday by "mega-pastor" Rick Warren during a televised forum.

Asked at what point a baby gets "human rights," Obama, who strongly supports abortion rights, said: "… whether you're looking at it from a theological perspective or a scientific perspective, answering that question with specificity … is above my pay grade."

He went on to reiterate his view that it was important to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"But for many conservative evangelicals — a key part of the evangelical base — life begins at conception and the argument ends there."

My argument with with this statement is at odds with how death is viewed later in life. To say that life exists the moment sperm penetrates an egg is asking a lot of a microscopic cell. OK. Ask if it's a good thing to execute people they will most often say yes. Because they are very bad people it's all right to kill them. Is it a sin to kill people in war? No. Because that's what you do when you're at war. What if you threw a grenade into a building that had men shooting at you and you killed a mother and four children hiding within? That's fine because you didn't mean to.

These particularly moral beings have an explanation for everything and they know they're right. To confront them with the fact that death is appropriate depending on circumstance they will respond it depends if you're doing good or not. The moral of this boring litany is it is best not to speak with them about anything to do with bodies.
