"We have the greatest respect for Gov. Huckabee and respect his desire to elevate the discourse in this campaign. But there are nine people running for the GOP nomination and an arbitrary pairing of just two of them does a disservice to the voters. We will push hard for Lincoln-Douglas style debates once we get into the General Election, when there are only two candidates running."
Sounds like Fred's afraid of what could happen if the debate happens. Just MHO.
No, I don't think so.
I think he has a point that this would not fit where they are in the process.

There are surely rules of propriety in play here.
Rules of propriety?
I heard Thompson saying how much he like the idea of Lincoln-Douglas style debates because they give the people of America a chance to hear more than a 30 second sound byte. I am not impressed that Thompson declined the debate. I think Thompson is just another politician trying to sound different, but not really being different. In other words, all talk.
So I'm going with Andrew Min on this one.
I agree. I would have loved to watch a Thompson/Huckabee style debate.
In my opinion, Fred just didn't want to elevate Huckabee to the first tier. And he has a reason to be afraid of doing that.
As I noted on my blog, if I were Mike Huckabee, I would offer an open challenge to all the candidate, but I would single out Ron Paul.
The more I see Mike Huckabee the more I like him. I hope he's still a viable candidate when the primaries come to Indiana.
