Now that we have Google Analytics installed, I thought it might be interesting to see who reads my blog. I found some very interesting facts (from Aug 20 - present):

  • The majority of my readers are... Democrats? I guess most of them are friends from the tech section, not the politics. They also love Obama, Clinton, and Paul.
  • The majority of my visitors come from the United States, followed by Canada and the UK.
  • I have a visitor from every state, except Montana.
  • The state that sent the most visitors is California, followed by my home state of New Jawsey, Texas, and the state I was born in, New Yawk.
  • I have had visitors from every country in Europe except Belarus and Serbia. At least, as far as I can tell (the map doesn't let you zoom).
  • The Muslim Middle East has obstinately ignored me. Saudi Arabia sent two visits, Kuwait, Palestinian Territory, and the UAE each sent one. Israel however sent nine. I guess that shows the type of Middle East content I write/comment on ;-)
  • The city that sent the most visits is surprisingly London. In second was Oakland, New Jersey (where my ISP is located. Hmm....), followed by Chicago and New Yawk. Believe it or not, the 8th place city was Pleasanton. Wow. In total, 825 cities sent me visits.
  • As far as continents go, North America sent the most by far. Northern Europe, Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Southeastern Asia also finished high.
  • For page visits/views, Fiji scored highest with 6.00. Of course, they only sent one visitor. Sudan had four visits, and averaged 2.75.
  • As far as average time on my site, Brazil came on top with 16 minutes (and 17 visits)! Venezuala came in second with 15:02 (and 3), Croatia in third with 14:60 and 7 visits. The US average is 3:19.
  • There were 59 countries with 100% new visits, but since most of them had only one visit I didn't count them. Australia had 96.92% new visitors, so I retract every bad thing I ever said about Australians ;-). On the other end of the spectrum, Jamaica only had 40% new visits, and Chile and Mauritius had 50% each.
  • I'm averaging 140 views/day, with the biggest day being August 24 with 529 visits. I didn't even write anything on the 24th.
  • 91.26% of my visitors only visit once. Ouch. 3.51% visited twice, 1.38% visited three times, 0.79% visited four times, and a measly 0.29% visited 26-50.
  • My visitors are smart: they use Firefox! 57.55% of them, anyway.
  • My visitors are stupid: they use Windows! 72.56% of them, anyway. 20.33% use Linux, 6.82% use Macintosh, 0.08% use FreeBSD, and 0.04% use SunOS.
  • My visitors are smart and stupid: 38.14% use Firefox on Windows. 30.66% use IE, and only 16.23% use Firefox on Linux.
  • My visitors like speed: Most use Cable, DSL, or T1.
  • The top referrers are Google (46.59%), LinuxToday (21.62%), and (duh) Newsvine (7.70%). 7.03% came without a referrer.
  • Top keywords are: "garageband for windows", "garageband windows", "garage band for windows", "virtualbox 1.5", and "garage band windows". I think they were looking for this. Which explains why they all came only once.

So what's your success (or failure) story?

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Speaking of horror stories, mine is one of them! I can't seem to get it to work. I've copied and pasted the code it gave me into the tracking box, but it says it can't detect the tracking code. Any help?

When did you first paste the code? Sometimes it takes 24 hours to see it.

I tried several times. I would paste the code, and wait a day. When I'd go back and check it would tell me it wasn't detected. I made sure I waited 24 hours, though.

I also can't get it to work. :( I gave up until I saw this article. When I checked again, it still isn't tracking. It says there was one visitor a few weeks ago, but I've had a bunch of comments& votes for stuff. *sigh*

Follow the instructions at http://brianford.newsvine.com/_news/2007/08/23/915735-google-analytics-comes-to-newsvine to add analytics.

As for pictures, you can't do it for seeds. For articles, when you go to write an article, there should be a button saying Upload Image underneath the groups selection.

Okay, I got that part set up. How do I go back and check it? Do I have to go through Google?

After you set up the code, you can check the stats at http://www.google.com/analytics/.

I've been meaning to do something similar to this. Then I got the PPP syndrome - Procrastinating Prevents Progress.

I love stats of all kinds - the GA hookup is right up my street of desires! Fascinating results - I'll do something sometime soon.

Stunned by those who spend hours reading practically everything on my column yet have never left me even a solitary comment. Perhaps they may occasionally drop me a vote or two - hard to know. Would love to know that I am being stalked but I'm too old and ugly so it can't be that:-)

And whoever comes and reads me from far off places like the Caribbean - thank you. Even if most of those far off places tend to have a 100% bounce rate.

Africa, continent of my birth is largely an unknown quantity. Only S Africa knows I exist. The rest have not been enlightened. Lots of potential lurkers to bounce!

      Thanks for inspiring Andrew.
